Been sick for the past two days
and because of malaria symptoms scoffed down a few “Lariam’s” last night, does
not seem to have made a difference. Sore bones, headaches, a running tap for a
nose and a nasty cough. Had today off work.

Professor Patience until recently held the chair of Political Science at
the University of PNG in Port Moresby. He was very outspoken and hist
articles frequently appeared in the local newspapers. Many of Professor
Patience's ideas and opinions on PNG were scoffed at by locals but for
me they actually rang the bell of truth. You can make up your own mind.

This past week has been the hardest week by far since
arriving in PNG, April 2005. Right now I feel both exhausted and relieved.
Exhausted due to the quantity and intensity of issues and experiences that I
have had to face. Relieved because the worst is behind me.
In the past seven days the following unfolded:
1) My
dear friend Jerry’s son dies.
2) I
travel with…

…that care for me and stay tuned to my blog and read yesterday's post - the Lariam (Mefloquin) I pumped myself full of last night has broken the back of this hideous illness - the big “M” (Malaria) - not a pleasant experience at all, especially the shivering and shaking. I popped into the UNITECH clinic this morning and my temperature had come down from mid 38's to low 37's…

…in paradise !1) Have just come down with the big “M” (Malaria). On top of still being in recovery mode from my trip to “Bamata” village… illness strikes. In a masochistic sort of way I am “thrilled” to have contracted this tropical illness as I have been curious what it might be liket.2) Just had a blew with Eli. Yukkie but resolvable. Hope she is still at home after I…

Simon the gardener passed away last night in Angau Hospital. I have only just found out and have already shed a tear or two. One of my 1st PNG friends in Lae and a man I would describe as a true survivor. The above photo is the last photo I took of Simon and was taken a couple of weeks ago at home after a “hard” days work. On the days…

Of to the hospital in Port Moresby…Got out of bed at 6am, packed, showered, drank lots of coffee and smoked about a dozen ciggies. The bus was booked for 9:30am, so there was plenty of time for me to “focus” on my sore leg. I had been pumping pain killers into me since the previous afternoon so was therefore…
