Stori long Ples

PNG Ples or PNG Village is where that something “special” can still be found. With around 90% of Papua New Guineans still living “long ples” most locals remain true the rituals, traditions and customs of their ancestors. Having said that – change (so called progress) is hitting these rural folks at a rate of knots and not always for the best.

Our dream home!

The construction of our own traditional Simbu village dwelling is about to commence. We had an unexpected visitor today, Uncle Joel. Apart from dropping in some garden food for us we also took the opportunity to discuss various aspects of the building of a “haus kunai” including design, required tools, workers and gifts in kind

The sound of AC/DC…

We left home early this morning for a day trip to Eli’s village in Simbu Province (Kaubasis). It was only going to be a short stay as we wanted to be back in Goroka late afternoon and before dark

Photos from my last visit to Wagang…

Have now been posted to the: Wagang visit (25/11/06) photo album

Eli’s back !!

Eli got back this afternoon from “Mudjin”, a small village in the Markham Valley about 2 hours from Lae, where she was helping a PhD student with some translation work on some research she is doing in PNG. I sure missed (new experience) Eli whilst she was away for three weeks and briefly saw her at at lunch time – sure am looking forward to giving her a big hug

Another Visit to Wagang village

Arrived back in Lae this afternoon after another visit to Wagang-Luhu. This was my 5th visit to the village. Highlights of this visit were as follows

A precious memory…

The above photo was taken as we were leaving “Kaubasis” village in Simbu. After I took this photo I turned around and did not look back. The memory of the experience behind this photo will probably stay with me for the rest of my days. This was the moment where local and visitor were bidding each farewell

Finally !

All the photos from the “Kaubasis” visit back in July have now been posted. Some great shots of village life and some of the people I met during my five day stay in Simbu

Back at work…

after yesterday’s visit to Wagang-Luhu. In the end I had close to a three hour wait at the Rainbow Store in town for the PMV/truck. I started waiting at around 9:30am and left Lae in the PMV at around 12:30pm. The wait went very quickly – as around the Rainbow Store there are many street sellers and colourful characters

Today….

I’m heading off to Wagang-Luhu for the day. After I few days of intense marking I need a bit of a breather plus I promised my friend Jethro (Wagang-Luhu clan elder) that I would come and visit him. The original plan was to stay for two or three nights (on the beach) but there is just too much work on at the moment to take that many days off work

Simbu – Highlanders and their politics !!

It is a well known fact that PNG Highlanders take their politics very seriously
