Toksave na Tingting

Toksave: information, news or announcement. Tingting: opinion or thoughts. Here you will find a collection of local stories, topics of current interest, Papua New Guinea news, happenings and general clippings. Note that I have been known to share my personal views and opinions on “things” from time to time.

PNG Sorcery Act 1971

last night I was perusing the PNG Sorcery Act 1971 and found no reference, legislation or act that gives community leaders, clergymen, local magistrates nor any other person – the right to kill anybody that is accused of witchcraft or sanguma. How are these folks then able to justify their actions?

The Inquisition a la Highlands style

It would appear that the Inquisition is alive and very active in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. If today’s story (see below) in The National is true and folks are able to use the Bible and the name of God to justify this type atrocity then something very sick has happened to Christianity in this country

A classic example of PNG logic?

Is the following a classic example of how logic works slightly differently around these parts or perhaps proof that I have little to no understanding of economics?

Can the Chiefs be trusted?

There was a time when the Chiefs could be trusted but that time unfortunately has long since gone!!

Is more religion the answer for Papua New Guinea?

This is a question that many Papua New Guineans would automatically assume that they know the answer to. Let’s investigate this question a little further. The issues in this country are very complex and finding effective solutions to these problems, in my humble opinion, will never be as simple as just saying this country needs more god or religion. In fact, I would go so far to say that if religion was the answer to PNG’s woes then Papua New Guinea would already have reached a status of Super Power

A thief at Goroka General Hospital?

This morning I arrived at the office to find that my wireless mouse was missing. I seem to have had a string of things “taken” from me of late and it irks me no end. I shared a couple of weeks ago about “Papua New Guineans and trust” and the situation just seems to be going from bad to worse

Papua New Guineans and trust

Trust is one of those qualities of human relationship and interaction that is essential for families, communities and ultimately nations to not only prosper but also to survive. In any civil society and at some level, somewhere-somehow trust and confidence in the people that one interacts with must exist or else the social fabric starts to self destruct

No names no faces

I’m going to share a short story with you that clearly demonstrates the obvious corruption and at times twisted behaviour that is endemic within Papua New Guinea. When folks talk about corruption they inevitably point their fingers at the halls of power in Port Moresby or the assemblies at Provincial level, they blame Politicians and bureaucrats, some point there finger at the Police or maybe even big business and of course the last few years the asians have copped it

10 Things that I miss living in PNG

It is easy to take things for granted when one lives in a place such Sydney or any other largish town for that matter. One has access to the full gamut of goods and services and in most cases these can all be found within minutes from home or work

Papua New Guinea and Tok Ples

The number and variety of languages in Papua New Guinea is unbelievable. It is estimated that there are somewhere between 700 and 800 languages in this country that are currently spoken. Some suggest that this figure could be as high as 900. A tribal or local language is referred to in Tok Pisin as Tok Ples
